MISSION

The American Association of Latinos in STEM (AALSTEM) is a network of established Latino professionals that are committed to supporting the next generation in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through guidance and mentorship in an effort to cultivate and blaze the trail for future generations of Latino professionals.

GOALS

The AALSTEM mentoring program focuses on the personal, academic and social needs of college students. It is dedicated to building relationships to empower college students in taking on leadership roles in their school and community at large. In addition, we provide services, resources, and support needed for students to realize their full potential in order to meet their personal and career aspirations. The relationships formed enable mentees to broaden their horizons, grow and develop academically, build a positive image and develop strong leadership skills.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

  • DURATION
    The mentoring program shall have a one-year duration.   The year shall start on September and finish on September of the following year.
  • MENTOR/MENTEE RATIO
    Mentors may be selected for a maximum of 2 mentees in an internship year.
  • MENTOR REQUIREMENTS
    Applicants for the program shall have the following:
    • Professional with at least 2 years of experience.
    • Good standing with the community.
  • MENTEE REQUIREMENTS
    Applicants for the program shall have the following:
    • GPA of 3.0 or higher.
    • For HS seniors or college freshmen, 90 average or higher.
    • Pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math.
    • Good standing with the community.
  • LOCATION
    Applicants for mentors and mentees shall reside or attend a college in the tri-state area.
  • INTERNSHIPS
    AALSTEM may work with professionals and companies in the tri-state area to secure internships for mentees of this program.

MENTOR EXPECTATIONS

Mentors shall:

  • Monitor mentee’s progress throughout the entire relationship
  • Provide educational, personal, and leadership guidance
  • Reinforce ethics and professionalism
  • Ensure mentees objectives for the program are met
  • Share experiences for individual growth

MENTEE EXPECTATIONS

Mentees shall:

  • Engage actively with the mentor
  • Nurture relationship with the mentor
  • Share experiences and be open to feedback
  • Be respectful of mentor’s time and knowledge
  • Establish their objectives and expectations for the program

FORMS

  • MENTEE APPLICATION
    All mentee applications shall be submitted online through the www.aalstem.org website. All applications are due on February prior to the following internship year. If the mentee is extending their participation to the following internship year, a new application is required.
  • MENTOR APPLICATION
    All mentor applications shall be submitted online through the www.aalstem.org website. All applications are due on March prior to the following internship year. If the mentor is extending their participation to the following internship year, a new application is not required.
  • EVALUATION FORMS
    Mentors and mentees may be asked to fill evaluation forms (i.e. surveys) during the internship program to obtain feedback for annual reviews.

ANNUAL REVIEW

  • This program shall be reviewed every year to continuously improve and ensure alignment with the organization’s mission.  The yearly program review cycle and time frame will be determined by the executive board.
